Remembrance Sunday Service of Commemoration

On behalf of the Committee of the Brussels Branch of the Royal British Legion, I wish to thank you for agreeing to attend and to participate in our annual Service of Remembrance and Commemoration, which will take place on Remembrance Sunday, 10 November.

Following the success of last year’s event, we are again returning to the beautiful Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery, at Heverlee.  Lying just to the south of Leuven, this is the final resting place of 983 service men and women from seven Nations and from both World Wars.  Those of us who were privileged to be present last year as we marked the centenary of the Armistice were witness to the extraordinary sight of 500 people walking down four country lanes to converge at the entrance to this peaceful cemetery.  It was a most moving occasion and one which the Brussels Branch is keen to repeat going forward.

I am delighted that Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Belgium, Mr Martin Shearman will be present.  Naturally, we also hope to be joined by veterans, civilians and serving military personal from the United Kingdom, Belgium, Canada, Poland, New Zealand and other Nations.  The Military Wives Choir, Belgium will sing during the Service.  I am especially delighted, however, that a number of Guide and Scout Groups from Brussels and Waterloo, including yours, have expressed their intent to join us.  You will have a key role to play and we think this is really important as we look to make the issues around Remembrance more relevant to the younger generations….

The Service will start at 10:45 but I am encouraging an early arrival as it is apparent that there is considerable interest in this event.

Scouts should congregate together at the rear leaving the main centre access free.. and then follow directions as they proceed to their places as a group with flags at the start of the service.

…We very much look forward to welcoming you, your Scouts and Guides and their families to Heverlee.  I can only reiterate that we are thrilled that your young people wish to play an active role with us in Remembrance.
